Field Services

Curtis Engine has over 20 service technicians all of whom are factory-trained by one or more major generator manufacturers including MTU Onsite Energy, Katolight, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Waukesha, Mitsubishi, Caterpillar, Cummins/Onan, Kohler, and Generac. Our technicians are power generation specialists and trained on the whole system – we don’t dispatch engine mechanics or electricians.

We perform continuous in-house training to keep our technicians up to date with the latest technologies and have them re-certified by the factory every two years. From the initial commissioning through each major overhaul, your equipment is in the capable hands of an experienced factory-trained technician.

Our technicians can inspect, diagnose, and maintain any make or model of generator, transfer switch, or switchgear. We are organized in teams to promote communication between technicians and to provide support for complex technical issues. All of our technicians are equipped with GPS-enabled smart phones and work orders are prioritized and scheduled based on your needs – even at night or on weekends.

Making sure that work is completed on schedule helps minimize equipment downtime. We have a modern fleet of safe and dependable four-wheel-drive service vehicles containing the necessary parts and tools required to perform all but the most unusual repairs.

If you have any questions about our field services, would like to schedule a repair, or receive a free quotation for a repair, please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service.

Start Up and Commissioning

Curtis Engine provides factory certified technicians to perform startup and commissioning of the generators that we sell. We inspect the equipment to ensure that the installation meets the factory’s standards for safe and reliable operation. Our technicians train the owner or the owner’s representative on the operation and basic maintenance requirements of the equipment to raise their comfort level with the new generator. We also complete the commissioning paperwork, activate the warranty, and provide the owner’s manual and technical documentation at this time.

Warranty Administration

Curtis Engine is an authorized warranty service center for MTU Onsite Energy, Waukesha Engine-Dresser, and John Deere. We manage warranty issues from identification to repair through reimbursement. When the repair is complete, we file and track the claim so you don’t have to.

We also provide extended warranty plans for new and existing systems. Please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service for warranty information.

Emergency Response

Curtis Engine offers 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-days-a-year emergency service. We allow our technicians to take their service vehicles home and after-hours calls to our 800 number are automatically routed to the on-call technicians. Our four-wheel-drive service vehicles are stocked with the proper tools and most parts helping to ensure that even when the weather is at it’s worst, we will be able to respond, and when we arrive we will be able to fix the problem as quickly as possible, usually in the initial trip.

When the weather is bad or in the case of a widespread outage, Curtis Engine has its own emergency plan that it implements. Around the clock, our technicians are on-site at customer locations to help, our parts and warehouse employees are gathering the necessary parts and equipment, and our management and office staff are manning the phones – assuring our customers and directing our resources. Even during an individual customer crisis, our technicians have full access to our shop and facilities and the home numbers of each of our employees to ensure that problems are solved quickly and efficiently.

We can’t predict when the next emergency will happen, but we can promise that we will respond quickly and that our team will be prepared if and when it does occur. If emergency service is needed, day or night, please call our toll free number (800) 573-9200 for a fast and efficient response.

Planned Maintenance

We recognize that you paid a great deal of money to insure your business or institution from power disruptions and that you expect the equipment to work flawlessly when called upon. Generators require periodic preventative maintenance to ensure long-term, trouble-free operation and Curtis Engine offers a full-range of maintenance and testing services. We have designed programs which incorporate scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, and testing tailored to your needs.

These programs include regularly scheduled inspections, fluid and filter changes, environmentally safe disposal of used fluids and parts, and complete testing of the system. As part of our planned service visit, a trained technician will conduct a thorough, point-by-point inspection of the:

  • Engine, Generator, and Controls
  • Automatic Transfer Switches, Switchgear, and Electrical Connections
  • Batteries, Battery Chargers, and Engine Electrical Systems
  • Cooling System and Radiators
  • Exhaust System and Mufflers
  • Fuel System and Day Tanks

They will also correct or adjust any minor discrepancies and prepare a scheduled maintenance checklist along with testing documents and a written quote of any necessary or recommended repairs.

During the 2003 Blackout in the Northeast, reports indicate that 20% of the generators either failed to start or failed shortly after starting. The number one cause of the generator system failures was dead or weak batteries. Other causes were old or contaminated fuel, corroded cables, clogged radiators, deteriorated belts and hoses, and control panel circuit board and sensor failures.

While planned maintenance will not guarantee that you will never have a problem – routine inspections and testing enable us to find minor problems and correct them before they become major problems.

Maintenance Contracts

Curtis Engine offers planned maintenance contracts to suit your site specific needs and schedule. Contract intervals run from monthly services for critical installations such as hospitals and data centers, to quarterly, semi-annual, and annual service intervals.

Why purchase a planned maintenance contract?

  • Your Emergency Power Supply System is in the hands of power generation specialists.
  • We can keep you in compliance with regulatory requirements such as NFPA and JCAHO.
  • Periodic preventative maintenance saves you money by reducing long-term costs.
  • You receive preferred treatment in scheduling and emergency response.
  • A complete record of your equipment’s maintenance history and cost is developed.

Our maintenance procedures are in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and designed to keep your equipment in peak operating condition. We can also meet the requirements of the NFPA and JCAHO codes and standards. We know what the common failure points are and our technicians are trained to solve existing or potential electrical and mechanical problems on ALL generator and automatic transfer switch makes and models.

View Inspection Checklist

Full reports, complete with run-time logs, checklists, test results, recommendations, and service documentation, are provided to you upon completion of the service and permanently filed to create a service history for each piece of equipment. We also highlight any deficiencies discovered and notify you immediately of any safety or reliability concerns.

Even if you have qualified in-house technical personnel who can perform the required preventative maintenance activities, we can back them up with a customized maintenance agreement that could include supplying parts kits, performing unplanned maintenance and repairs, top-end and bottom-end overhauls, or specialized testing services.

For more information about customizing a Planned Maintenance Agreement to suit your needs, or for a price quote for a one-year or multi-year contract, please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service.

All Inclusive Extended Warranties

Our Curtis Gold maintenance agreements combine regular servicing with an extended warranty. We put our money where our mouth is and we are confident that our trained technicians are among the very best in the industry. For a set annual rate, on qualifying equipment we will assume responsibility for your equipment’s maintenance costs by covering:

  • Scheduled and unscheduled service
  • Overhauls
  • 100% of the customary parts and labor costs for covered component failures due to defects in materials and workmanship

In order to qualify, the equipment to be covered must successfully pass an inspection by our technician. Coverage is available for a 60-month term and is renewable up to 20-years from the original startup date.

For more information about our Curtis Gold maintenance agreements, please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service.

Spare Parts Inventories

We make every effort to ensure that our technician’s trucks are stocked with parts that, in our experience, routinely need to be replaced in order to fix problems quickly and efficiently. We also stock many necessary engine, generator, and automatic transfer switch replacement parts in our warehouse and can source any part for all makes and models through our supplier network.

We recognize the extremely high cost of equipment downtime and for our customers who can never afford to be down, we recommend an on-site spare parts inventory consisting of materials required for frequently encountered minor repairs; and, low-failure rate, long-lead items that can incapacitate the system without the ability to bypass or substitute in an emergency situation (e.g. governors, injectors). This significantly reduces repair time by eliminating the time waiting for the part to arrive.

Plan ahead! Allow one of our experienced technicians to conduct a site assessment and recommend a spare parts inventory for your site. We will provide a parts kit that can be secured at your location and accessed during emergencies. Please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service.

Repairs, Overhauls and Modifications

Curtis Engine is your one-stop source for power generation system repairs. Our technicians work on engines, generators, transfer switches, switchgear, and fuel systems day in and day out. They are trained on the whole system and capable of troubleshooting and diagnosing most repairs, whether electrical or mechanical.

  • Complete overhauls
  • Top-end overhauls
  • Fuel injectors and pumps
  • Cylinder head reconditioning
  • Borescope inspections
  • Starter repairs and rebuilds
  • Turbo charger repairs
  • Mufflers and exhaust systems
  • Radiators and water pumps
  • Hydraulic pumps
  • Day tanks and fuel tanks
  • Fuel purifiers
  • Bi-fuel conversions
  • Control panel upgrades
  • Remote annunciators
  • Circuit breakers and protective relays
  • Governors and voltage regulators
  • Battery chargers and block heaters
  • Custom enclosures and integrated load banks
  • New and remanufactured engines, generator ends, and transfer switches

After identifying the problem – whether the float switch on your day tank needs to be replaced, the linear motor on your transfer switch failed, or you need to overhaul the engine – we will provide a written quote of the necessary repairs along with our recommendation. We then assign one of our most experienced technicians to plan and oversee the work. Additionally, we can provide and hook-up one of our rental gensets to keep you protected while the repairs are being performed.

Most repairs are performed in-place at your site. For jobs such as major overhauls, rewinding generator ends, or re-coring radiators, we bring the component back to our shop to complete the repair. We use reputable machine shops, new and remanufactured OEM parts, and factory-trained technicians for all of our repairs.

Before you replace your old generator set, let us check to see if repairs or modifications are a better option. If replacement is necessary, we can provide a new system or new system component to suit your requirements and budget. Please call (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service for a free quote.

Free Safety Inspections

During a power outage is not the time to find out your emergency power system has problems. A generator safety inspection identifies possible safety and reliability concerns associated with a poor installation, inadequate maintenance, and excessive wear and tear.

If you are not confident that the generator at your facility will perform or is safe to operate in an emergency, please contact us at (800) 573-9200 or send an e-mail to service for a free safety inspection performed by one of our knowledgeable Field Service technicians.
